Moog Subharmonicon | How do I sync Subharmonicon to a DAW like Ableton?

The Subharmonicon can accept MIDI data through the MIDI IN jack utilizing the supplied TYPE A MIDI adapter. You will require a MIDI INTERFACE that links to your computer, typically via USB or Thunderbolt on Mac.

Connect a standard 5-Pin MIDI cable to the OUT port of your MIDI interface.  The opposite end of the cable should be connected to the Type A MIDI adapter included with your Subharmonicon, and this 1/8 inch adapter will then fit into the MIDI IN jack on the patchbay of your Subharmonicon.

Your computer is now linked to the MIDI interface, which will relay MIDI signals to the Subharmonicon.

Next, you need to adjust your DAW’s settings.  Each DAW has its own MIDI preference window, but the general approach is similar across most. Although we will outline the steps for Ableton Live, the same principles will apply to other DAWs:

  1.  Navigate to the Options tab, select Preferences, and then click on the Link/MIDI tab on the left.

  2.  Find your MIDI Interface and Subharmonicon in the Output section, and switch the Track and Sync buttons to ON to activate them.

  3. Hit play in Ableton to verify that the Subharmonicon is receiving sync. It should play in time with the DAW’s timeline. Next, send some notes from Ableton through a MIDI channel, which can be created by using SHIFT + CMD + T. The Subharmonicon should produce the notes being sent from your DAW (tracking).

  4.  Be sure to consult the Subharmonicon manual for instructions on sending MIDI CC's from your DAW.
