Moog Muse | General Troubleshooting

For general troubleshooting of the Muse, we recommend the following steps in order:

1) TUNING INSTRUCTION

Muse's tuning works a bit differently than the rest of our synthesizers because the tuning table is extrapolated from a range of temperatures. For this reason, the instrument is calibrated at room temperature, and only started after being powered off for two hours to ensure the coolest starting temperature. Tuning measurements taken for QUICK TUNE are added to the foundational tuning table, so the more environments in which you run QUICK TUNE, the more robust your
instrument’s tuning will be.

If you have run QUICK TUNE multiple times unsuccessfully, it is recommended to run the full AUTO TUNE AND CAL.

Once the synth powered off for at least 45 minutes, turn on the power and let Muse boot. Once booted, press the TUNING button and START TUNE AND CAL. The goal here is to start the calibration from as low an internal temperature as possible. This will ensure the best tuning for the instrument over the widest temperature range.

2) PANEL CALIBRATION

  • To perform the PANEL CALIBRATION, press the TUNING button.
  • In the TUNING menu, press the two outer soft buttons (furthest left and furthest right) simultaneously.
  • Scroll through expanded menu and highlight PANEL CALIBRATION. Push down Select knob to choose this function.
  • The calibration starts with MID value and requires all the knobs to be set to their MID point. The screen will show a dot at each location where a pot needs to be positioned to MID and then it will go away when the knob is correctly set. Hit the button below SET MID.
NOTE: If you try to calibrate before all the knobs are correctly positioned the screen will show “NOT READY”. Any that are not in the right position will still be on the screen making it easy to find and correct.
  • Next you will need to move all the knobs to MIN (counter-clockwise), all the sliders down (or far left) and rotate the LHC wheels down, holding the pitch wheel in place.
  • You will see all the dots on the screen disappear and press SET MIN to calibrate the MIN points.
  • The screen will populate with the dots again and you will need to set the knobs, sliders and LHC wheels to MAX, holding up the Pitch wheel and then hit SET MAX.
  • Now, hit Store and the settings will be stored. This takes 30-60 seconds.
  • Press EXIT when complete.

3) FACTORY RESET

  • Connect Muse to your computer via USB and power on while holding the SELECT (PUSH) encoder to boot in DISK MODE
  • Remove everything from the root directory so the MUSE is empty
  • Download these three folders: Muse Disc Image and place the folders in the root directory of the Muse
  • Before ejecting the Muse from your computer, confirm that there are only three folders:
